Prinovis prints Sunday Times

Following a lengthy and intensive preparation phase, we are out of the starting blocks: since the beginning of January, Prinovis Liverpool is printing the largest of the three order packages of News International (NI), consisting of the three weekly magazines Sunday Times Culture, Sunday Times Magazine and Sunday Times Style. Weekly circulation could reach 1.5 million copies! In a transition period of four weeks, 550 000 copies were printed in the first week of January as the start-up version edition. Prinovis Liverpool achieved full circulation in the fourth week of January.

Together with the Sun TV Guide, launched in Liverpool in March 2007, over 50 percent of the NI volume is thereby handled by the new Prinovis print shop. The Times package follows in January 2009 and News of the World in July 2009. This completes the transition, which stretched over more than two years.

The Sunday Times package has significantly influenced the capacities and machine specifications of Prinovis Liverpool by making extremely high demands on quality, flexibility and scheduling. The required capacity is in place in the Printing and Saddle stitching areas; the fourth line will start up at Polybag packaging in January, to ensure guaranteed deadlines even for complex structures and high circulations. Important facts about the package:

  • Full range production at maximum complexity: engraving – print with soft proofs as templates (matching with screen proofs at the printing machines) – stapling – polybagging.
  • Sunday Times Culture: one four-colour and two key changes in rotogravure printing, stapled and cut in-line, tight schedule for all NI objects, large format.
  • Sunday Times Magazine and Style: rotogravure print cover and rotogravure print content each, saddle stitching with special inserts.

The three products are then rolled up on printing rolls and individually sealed in (polybagged). Prinovis Liverpool thereby brings together the three supplements with up to seven onserts plus gimmick (CD for instance) – more than News International can currently do. This is all the more important to NI, because the media company will no longer be able to do direct inserts in their newspapers in future. This means that all inserts must be placed in the supplementary production as inserts or onserts by Prinovis.

According to Astrid Meicherczyk from Prinovis Sales, the good cooperation with the customer and the high degree of confidence deserves special mention. Further workshops will be held to constantly improve cooperation and to increase efficacy in Production. »The customer is looking for an active partnership with a high degree of trust and transparency to ensure that the best possible solutions can in difficult situations be found together«, says Astrid Meicherczyk. Good luck and lots of success to the Liverpool colleagues!
